You must pay advance tax during FY 2025-26 if your total tax liability after TDS is more than ₹10,000. How it is calculated
Who pays advance tax
Anyone whose income tax for the year, after deducting TDS, exceeds ₹10,000. This commonly affects freelancers, business owners, and salaried people with large capital gains, interest or rental income where TDS does not fully cover the tax.
Instalment schedule for FY 2025-26
- By 15 June 2025: 15% of total tax
- By 15 September 2025: 45% (cumulative)
- By 15 December 2025: 75% (cumulative)
- By 15 March 2026: 100% (cumulative)
Interest for shortfall
Missing an instalment triggers interest at 1% a month under section 234C, and under 234B if you pay less than 90% of your tax by year end. Senior citizens without business income are exempt from advance tax.
Worked example. If your tax after TDS is ₹1,00,000, you pay ₹15,000 by June, ₹30,000 by September, ₹30,000 by December and ₹25,000 by March.

Who is exempt from advance tax?

What happens if I miss advance tax?
You pay simple interest at 1% per month on the shortfall under sections 234B and 234C. Paying the correct instalments on time avoids this interest.
Does TDS count towards advance tax?
Yes. Advance tax applies only to the tax remaining after TDS already deducted. If TDS covers your whole liability, you may owe no advance tax.
